BARBARA
REMON OF THE DANVERS FOOD PANTRY RECEIVES AN AWARD
Congratulations to Barbara Remon who recently
received an unsung Hero of Massachusetts from the Commission on Women for her work
as the co- founder and long-time volunteer at the Danvers People to People Food
Pantry. Barbara in one of the many volunteers of the various food
pantries around the region that does so much for so many. Anything you
can do to support your local Food Pantry is much appreciated by all.
NORTH
SHORE BANK MERGES WITH MERRIMACK SAVINGS
In a deal
similar to its merger with Saugusbank last year, Peabody-based North Shore Bank
has announced plans to grow by merging with a small mutual savings bank
- Merrimac Savings Bank.
Merrimac has
$73 million in assets and two full-service locations in Merrimac,
Massachusetts, and in Newton, New Hampshire, plus an ATM in Plaistow, New
Hampshire.
North Shore
Bank has $680 million in assets and 10 locations in Salem, Beverly, Peabody,
Danvers, Middleton and Saugus. With the merger, the name of the combined
banks will be North Shore Bank, putting an end to Merrimac Savings Bank, which
has been around for about 144 years. No branch closings or layoffs are
anticipated. The heads of both banks said some Merrimac Savings employees may
not want to commute to Peabody.
MARIAN
COURT IN SWAMPSCOT TO CLOSE
SWAMPSCOTT —
Only a few years after expanding to a four-year school, Marian Court College is
closing its doors. School officials cite poor enrollment as the reason for the
closure. Boosters are still hoping for an outside donor who might rescue
the school financially, but they concede something approaching a miracle is
required to save this Catholic institution. Established in 1964 by the
Sisters of Mercy, Marian Court is set to close on June 30, according to a press
release quoting President Denise Hammon.
“We are so
proud of our faculty, administration and staff’s commitment and passion for
providing quality education to students. 98 percent of the students are first
generation in the United States,” she said in a written statement.
SALEM
SRATE PAID HANSOMLY FOR THE RECENT TOM BRADYS PRESENTATION
It has been reported that the University paid
in excess of $150,000 for the recent Tom Brady speech, but this may have been a
great investment when considering the attendance at the event to be totally
sold out. Based on those facts, the net income for the project must have been
positive.
BRADY
HEARING WITH NFL DUE LATE IN THE MONTH OF JUNE
Speaking of Brady, his hearing could have an
impact on the England Patriots 2015-2016 season. The Pats seem to
be making provisions in the event that the Brady suspension is upheld, by bringing
in another quarterback by the name of Matt Flynn.

The Older
Americans Act:
Aging
Well Since 1965
“The
Older Americans Act clearly affirms our Nation’s sense of responsibility toward
the well-being of all of our older citizens. But even more, the results of this
act will help us to expand our opportunities for enriching the lives of all of
our citizens in this country, now and in the years to come.”

The 1960s
were a time of vast social and political change. In July 1965, President Lyndon
B. Johnson signed three land- mark pieces of legislation that together have
shaped the lives of generations of American elders – Medicare, Medicaid, and
the Older Americans Act (OAA). Medicare and Medicaid extended health insurance
coverage to millions of Americans. The OAA, meanwhile, created the foundation
for a system of services and supports that enables millions of older adults in
this country to continue to live independently as they age. In addition, the
OAA established authority for grants to states for community planning and
social services, research and development projects, and training personnel in
the field of aging. This multiplied its potential to positively affect the
lives of older adults. Perhaps most importantly, the law outlined a vision for
maintaining older Americans’ dignity and sustaining their connections to their
homes and communities – principles that continue to guide OAA programs to this
day.
Today,
OAA-funded programs play a vital role in helping to maintain the health and well-being
of millions of seniors age 60 and older. In fact, OAA services reach one in
five older adults. As a result of successive amendments to the original law, special
emphasis is placed on serving the most vulnerable among the older population –
people with low income, members
of minority groups, those at risk for
institutionalization, people living in rural areas, and those with limited
English proficiency.
Over the
years, Congress has amended the Act several times, creating the infra-
structure we now know as the ‘national aging services network.’ At present, the
network consists of 56 state units on aging, over 600 area agencies on aging,
and over 260 tribal organizations representing more than 400 tribes. Further,
the network is supported by tens of thousands of service providers and
volunteers. This system allows state, tribal, and local entities the
flexibility to provide the evidence-based interventions that best meet the
needs of their specific communities.
The State
House News Service is reporting on the proposed legislation to permit
spouses as paid caregivers and today’s Committee on Children and Families
hearing.
North Shore
Elder Services thanks the members of the North Shore legislative delegation who
have taken active positions in support of this legislation. We truly hope
that it prevails all the way to the Governor’s desk this session. The
North Shore Elder Services Board of Directors has taken a strong position in
support of the proposal. If you have any questions about it, particularly

Danvers: Abomed, the company that
produces artificial hearts, will increase job opportunities by 100 employees.
Marblehead: The residents of Marblehead
have voted positively to pass an eight million dollar tax over ride.
Danvers: The town has produced two
baseball teams competing for state titles. Danvers High School and
St Johns Prep are still alive in the tournaments.
Danvers:
The Swamp Walk News - During this past month, thanks to 30 generous donors
to our ‘Rising From The Swamp Campaign’, we have $4,700 !!!!! Danvers
town folk are amazing. That’s not enough to do the whole job, but it’s a huge
start.
I need to
remember that we were clueless when we started a few years ago. With only
$2,000, we (literally) waded in. After a while and after $40,000 & with 200
volunteers, we built the most unique outdoor experience in Danvers.
