Danvers Hires 1st ever Finance Director
Town Manager Steve Bartha has picked Travis Ahern, a finance and policy analyst for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority for the newly created position of finance director.
Bartha told selectmen recently he had come to terms with Ahern after an extensive search. He will make a yearly salary of $105,000, according to Human Resources Director Stephen Delaney.

“He has a chance to grow into this position in the long term,” Bartha told the board.“I’m excited for the opportunity to help shape the new finance director position,” Ahern said in an email. “I have experience taking a newly created position, and while it can be challenging, it is also very rewarding.”

Ahern has worked with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority since January 2014. His work at the agency included the review and analysis of budgets. He also created a monthly financial video series called “The Green Sheet,” to disseminate financial information about the MWRA to a broad audience.  Before that, he worked as a financial analyst for Weston from June 1011 to January 2014.  While in Weston, Ahern also served as the acting assistant treasurer from June 2013 to September 2013. Ahern also has a corporate financial background as a portfolio associate auditor with State Street Corp., from 2007 to 2011.

Ahern, 30, grew up west of Boston. The Waltham resident said where he lives now is advantageous, as he works on the North Shore, and his wife works at a school on the South Shore. The post of finance director was created on the heels of the retirement of longtime Town Accountant Leonard Marshall, who retired in June and who did several jobs in his position, including serving as the town accountant, DPW business manager, and both serving as chairman of the Retirement Board and administering it.

Essex Regional Tech School News
Former Beverly Superintendent William Lupini has been selected as the interim superintendent at Essex Technical High School, with the possibility of him taking the job on a permanent basis.  The 1,100-student regional school has been without a superintendent since Dan O'Connell announced his retirement in July.

The Essex Tech School Committee interviewed two finalists for the job on Thursday night and unanimously selected Lupini, who is currently the superintendent for the Brookline Public Schools. Marsha McDonough, a former superintendent at Greater Lawrence Technical, was the other finalist.

The committee will begin negotiating a contract with Lupini and hopes to have him on the job "as soon as we can," chairwoman Melissa Joy Teixeira said. "What it came down to is the majority of the committee believed that Mr. Lupini could jump right in and get started from Day 1 based on his experience," Teixeira said.  The interim superintendent position was advertised as lasting until June 30, 2016. Teixeira said Lupini has expressed an interest in possibly staying longer.

Lupini's salary has not been determined. O'Connell made about $197,000. Lupini earns $225,116 in Brookline, according to published reports.  Lupini, 55, served as the Beverly Superintendent from 1997 to 2004 before taking the job in Brookline. He said he told the Brookline School Committee in July that he would be looking at other jobs but planned to serve until the end of the 2015-2016 school year.  He still lives in Beverly and said he learned of the opening at Essex Tech in August. He decided to apply. Lupini sent an email to Brookline staff and parents earlier this week informing them that he had been named a finalist.

Recent Summer Reading
I have just finished reading The Hostage by WEB Griffin.  His book was an action thriller with many plot twists, across many countries in Western Europe and South America as welled as Washington D.C.  I recommend this book if you like adventure, intrigue of that genre.

I am just about to start a biography about Lyndon Johnson. The book was researched and written by Doris Kearns Goodwin and I have enjoyed her work in the past.  More will be provided on this work in the future.

Death of Salem City Councillor Joe O'Keefe
My condolences are offered to the O’ Keefe family.  Joe was 82 at his death just 4 years older than I and we grew up in the same general area by the Salem Common.   In our youth we were both involved in the Immaculate Conception Parish in Salem.  Joe was very involved in fire safety and was an institution in Salem as he served 7 terms on the Salem City Council.  Rest in peace Joe for a job well done,
