The Essex National Heritage Area
In 1996, the United States Congress recognized the national significance of the historic 500 square mile region north of Boston, Massachusetts, by establishing the Essex National Heritage Area (Essex Heritage). The Area is home to: 9,968 historic structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 400 historic farms, 86 significant museums, 26 important National Historic Landmarks, nine scenic State Parks, two notable National Park units, and one large National Wildlife Refuge. Collectively, these resources define a remarkable region where the present economy and quality of life are intertwined with its heritage maintaining the optimal balance between heritage and the economy generates success for all.

Essex Heritage takes a community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development working through public-private partnerships.  Essex Heritage uses the Area’s heritage resources in new ways to engage diverse audiences, from at-risk youth to trail enthusiasts, and in so doing, Essex Heritage has successfully advanced recognition for the value of the historic, cultural, and natural resources in the region.  Read more!

New Hotel may be in Salem’s Future
New development in Salem could include a building possibly of a one hundred hotel room.  It will be very interesting to see how that news is processed by the owners of the other two operating hotels in Salem.

People in the News

Donald “Koko” Kowalski
I am using this presentation to sadly advise his classmates at St. John’s Prep and friends from the Salem Common area that I have been notified by Roland “Mo” Morency of Salem and class agent for the Class of ’54 at the Prep that Donald “Koko” Kowalski’s health has taken a serious change for the worse and he is now in hospice care in Oregon.  He is without pain and the Hospice Organization handles conditions like his most professionally.

Personal Observations

Over the last couple of years, I have produced a weekly BLOG entitled Essex Happenings.   The goal of this weekly presentation has been to provide readers with my observations of what was transpiring in this Essex County Region.  For the most part those goals have been achieved as I have served as President Emeritus and a representative of the Essex National Heritage Commission which has worked on the development of activities and the presentation of events connected to the advancement of Essex National Heritage Area.  The BLOG had a rather specific connection to the Commission and effective July 2. 2013, I will no longer be producing a weekly presentation as my connection to Essex Heritage as a Blogger has been discontinued.

It is possible that sometime in the future, I might re-institute the weekly production of a BLOG presentation covering activities in this region most likely under a different name.   If that situation develops, we will make substantial efforts to alert all of our dedicated readers to be aware of any new effort.

To all of you that have carefully followed these weekly presentations to gain information, we will miss speaking with you.  Thank you for your interest in my BLOG and in Essex Heritage!
